Operators often talk about a machine’s power, but for cutting metal it is torque that does the real work. Confusing the two leads to poor speed and feed choices, stalled spindles, and disappointing tool life. A clear grasp of how torque and power relate makes a machine far easier to use well.
Two related but distinct quantities
Torque is the twisting force the spindle can apply. Power is the rate at which work is done, and it equals torque multiplied by rotational speed. This simple relationship has a big practical consequence: at low speed a spindle can offer high torque but modest power, while at high speed it offers high power but limited torque. The same motor behaves very differently across its range.
Why heavy cuts happen at low speed
Removing a lot of metal in one pass demands high torque, because the tool must overcome large cutting forces. That torque is available at lower spindle speeds. Push the speed up in a heavy cut and the available torque falls, the spindle bogs down, and the drive may trip. This is why roughing large diameters or hard materials is done slowly and finishing lighter cuts can run faster.
The constant-power region
Above a base speed, most spindles maintain roughly constant power while torque tapers off. Within this region, doubling the speed roughly halves the available torque. Understanding where a spindle’s base speed lies helps an operator choose a speed that offers enough torque for the cut in hand rather than blindly running fast.
Reading the machine’s behaviour
When a spindle labours, chatters, or the finish deteriorates, the usual cause is asking for more torque than is available at the chosen speed. The remedies are straightforward: reduce the depth or width of cut, adjust the feed, or move to a speed range where more torque is on tap. Forcing the cut instead risks the tool, the spindle, and the workpiece.
Thinking in terms of torque available at a given speed, rather than a single figure for power, transforms guesswork into judgement. It explains why the same machine feels strong in one situation and weak in another, and it guides the small adjustments that keep cuts controlled, finishes clean, and tools lasting as they should.
