The bench grinder is one of the oldest and simplest machines in the shop, yet it remains indispensable. From sharpening tools to deburring parts and shaping metal, a good grinder handles countless small tasks quickly. Using it well, and safely, is a basic skill every machinist should own.
What a bench grinder does best
At its core, a bench grinder spins one or two abrasive wheels for shaping and sharpening. It excels at reconditioning cutting tools, dressing the edges of drills and lathe tools, removing burrs from cut or machined parts, and rough shaping of small pieces. With the right wheels it becomes a versatile finishing station that saves trips to larger, slower machines.
Choosing and dressing wheels
Wheel selection matters more than many realise. Coarse wheels remove material fast but leave a rough surface; fine wheels finish smoothly but cut slowly. Matching the wheel’s grit and hardness to the job and the material prevents both wasted effort and overheating. Over time a wheel loads with metal and glazes over, cutting poorly; dressing it with a proper tool restores a clean, true, sharp face and keeps the grinder cutting cool.
Heat is the enemy of edges
Grinding generates heat quickly, and overheating a cutting tool can ruin its temper, leaving it soft and useless. Light passes and frequent dips in water keep tool steel cool, though certain modern tool materials should not be quenched. Understanding the material in hand prevents accidentally destroying the very edge you are trying to create.
Safety is non-negotiable
Grinders spin fast and throw sparks and particles, so eye protection is essential every time. Tool rests should be set close to the wheel, within a couple of millimetres, so work cannot be dragged down into the gap. Wheels must be inspected for cracks before mounting and run up to speed with the operator standing aside. Never grind on the side of a wheel not designed for it, and never force work against a wheel.
Humble as it is, a well-maintained bench grinder with sharp, dressed wheels and correctly set rests is a genuine asset. It turns dull tools sharp and rough parts clean in seconds, and it deserves the same respect for setup and safety as any larger machine in the shop.
